The regiment is in the company of the 142nd artillery regiment, personnel from the 16th evacuation hospital, the 54th, 63rd, 81st and 82nd base hospitals, the 59th pioneer regiment and other units for a total of 8,478 personnel to edge.
Le 808e régiment de pionniers est composé d'afro-américain et a été créé en juillet 1918 au Camp Meade (Maryland, USA). Le régiment fut le premier des régiments de pionnier à arriver en France pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, débarquant ses premières troupes à Brest le 7 septembre 1918. L’unité a servi comme réparateur et constructeur de routes, voies ferrées, ponts et d’hôpitaux sous les ordres des ingénieurs de l’armée. Le régiment retourna aux Etats-Unis en juin 1919 et fut démobilisé au Camp Lee (Virginie, USA).
The 808th Pioneer Regiment is made up of African-Americans and was created in July 1918 at Camp Meade (Maryland, USA). The regiment was the first of the pioneer regiments to arrive in France during World War I, landing its first troops at Brest on September 7, 1918. The unit served as repairer and builder of roads, railways, bridges and hospitals under the orders of army engineers. The regiment returned to the United States in June 1919 and was demobilized at Camp Lee (Virginia, USA).
Comme beaucoup d’hommes, il est atteint de la grippe espagnole. Il est admis le 17 septembre 1918 à l’hôpital complémentairen°84 avenue Denfert Rochereau, à AUXERRE (capacité de 400 lits) et décède officiellement de pneumonie, le 17 septembre 1918, 16h05. D’abord enterré à AUXERRE, son corps est exhumé pour le port de ANVERS (Belgique) le 28 mars 1921 et y arrive le 8 avril. Transféré le 26 avril pour HOBOKEN (New Jersey, USA) à bord de l’USS WHEATON, il y arrive le 18 mai et pour son dernier voyage du 9 au 10 juin 1921 direction MONROVIA (Virginie, USA). Son lieu de sépulture exact est inconnu, il repose dans un cimetière familial entre Monrovia Road et THORNHILL, Comté d’Orange (Virginie, USA).
Like many men, he suffered from the Spanish flu. He was admitted on September 17, 1918 to the complementary hospital n°84 avenue Denfert Rochereau, in AUXERRE (capacity of 400 beds) and officially died of pneumonia on September 17, 1918, 4:05 p.m. First buried in AUXERRE, his body was exhumed for the port of ANTWERP (Belgium) on March 28, 1921 and arrived there on April 8. Transferred on April 26 to HOBOKEN (New Jersey, USA) aboard the USS WHEATON, he arrived there on May 18 and for his last voyage from June 9 to 10, 1921, direction MONROVIA (Virginia, USA). His exact burial place is unknown, he rests in a family cemetery between Monrovia Road and THORNHILL, Orange County (Virginia, USA).
